COOLCITY Design
COOLCITY Design
An innovative planning tool based on geo-information technologies. It is powered by information obtained from a comprehensive inventory of gray and blue-green infrastructure, which is used to conduct a detailed valorization of the city in terms of five adaptation challenges shaping its adaptive potential
Inventory
Inventory
The inventory is based on specially acquired aerial data. We use machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to create maps.
- map of trees with information on trunk and crown parameters, species, condition, monumental specimens, and valuation of ecosystem services
- map of vegetation with its valorization and species richness
- map of invasive species
- map of low vegetation condition
- map of surface temperature
- map of insolation and albedo
- map of land cover
- map of endorheic basins with flooding hazard and flow liness
- water buget divided into infiltration, evaporation, and surface runoff
Valorization
Valorization
- Spatial indexes are used to valorize the city in terms of five adaptation challenges: suface permeability, vegetation state, biodiversity, water conditions, and thermal conditions. Additionally, the legal protection of areas and access to greenery are assessed.
- The service provides 54 spatial indicators. These include, among others, the degree of land sealing, the share of areas with high insolation, the share of tall trees, the phylogenetic diversity of vegetation, and the flooding of sealed areas. All indexes are calculated for a constant spatial unit, which is a hexagon with an area of 1.5 ha as well as for administartive and functional units of the city
Recommendations
Recommendations
Based on the valorization of the urban fabric for the entire city we develop recommendations for 16 types of NBS in three categories:
- Surface protection - where urban areas are most valuable in terms of adaptation to climate change. The system distinguishes between the recommendation to introduce formal protection, the purchase of land and inclusion in planning protection.
- Change in the maintenance in places where blue-green infrastructure has a reduced adaptive potential. We distinguish the following actions: stopping mowing, change in the maintenance of low vegetation, maintenance of trees and shrubs, replacement of dead trees
- Introduction of blue-green infrastructure - in the NBS catalog, we distinguish: introduction of trees and shrubs, micro-forest, infiltration basins, green roofs and tracks, roadside greenery plantings, comprehensive road reconstruction, low greenery plantings, unsealing of paved areas, and afforestation.
Decision Support System
Decision Support System
The Decision Support System allows for dynamic operation on the catalog of possible NBS solutions, defining their parameters and modeling their potential benefit for the city. Thanks to it, you can compare the effects of different actions at a given cost, optimizing the improvement of one of the five adaptation challenges or an integrated index. In response, the System not only returns the best solutions but also assesses their feasibility, cost, and economic efficiency.
The Decision Support System also allows for modeling negative changes: the introduction of buildings, roads, tree felling, as well as local plans with a specified minimum biologically active area.
Ecosystem services
Ecosystem services
Ecosystem services consist of two components:
- Services provided by tall vegetation - for each tree, depending on its parameters and location, the values of services for capturing air pollutants, retained surface runoff, and carbon sequestration are calculated. These values are assigned to each tree on the tree crown map
- Ecosystem services preferences based on a survey among residents. The cost analisys allows for modeling various nature-based solutions by optimizing the hypothetical willingness of residents to pay for the desired environmental effect.
Access to greenery
Access to greenery
The accessibility of greenery for city residents is a key parameter in designing both new blue-green infrastructure and new neighbourhoods.
In the system, you can compare various accessibility, including 3-30-300 rule, as well as other indicators required in national planning documents.
Expert Report
Expert Report
In addition to the tools and data available on the site, we provide an expert report - the CoolCity Design Report.
In the report, we present a synthesis of the diagnosis of the city's environmental along with our recommendations for taking adaptation actions. They are not only at the strategic level as in CoolCity View, but also at the operational level. It is the basis for the creation of further strategic or planning documents for the city, as well as for the operational day-to-day activities of green managers.
